Can we have a do over?

Jammers Hawaii 17s picked the wrong time to have the worst match of their collective lives. Impact 17 Silver took complete advantage, playing flawlessly in a 25-13, 25-6 romp that gave the Nashville club the 17 Club National title Tuesday afternoon at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Dallas.

Jammers, a fast but undersized team that was wonderful in a semifinal sweep of tall Southwest Illinois, stayed with the even taller Impact team through eight points. Then, after long-armed setter Alison Woods fed 6-2 middle Sam Serley for a kill that tied Game 1 at 8-8, it all fell apart. Impact outscored Jammers 42-11 the rest of the way.

Impact did everything right. Woods’ dumps were executed at exactly the right time, when the Jammers’ defense was on its heels. The serving, including an ace from Madelyn Hutson that gave Impact a 4-3 lead in Game 2, put enormous pressure on Hawaii’s back row. The block, featuring the 6-4 Hutson, the best freshman middle in the country; and the 6-2 Serley, was enormous and, in coach Jay Golsteyn’s words, “undeniable.” Even on those few occasions when Impact had to scramble, OH Kaycee Green made Jammers pay with precision strikes from the back row. All-tournament libero Ellen Mullins, on the court virtually the entire match, recorded only two digs. The ball rarely got to her. MVP Nicole Smith had only three kills in the match. She wasn’t often in the front row.

After Serley’s block gave Impact the first game, Jammers tried to get off to a fast start in Game 2. But not even a Candace Soares ace to open the set turned out right for Jammers, which had the wrong server behind the line.

Tied at 5-5 after a Green kill, Impact closed the game on 20-1 run. A block by Green and three by Serley, the MVP when Impact won 15 National in Atlanta two years ago, demoralized the Hawaiians.

“We talked that they were not going to hit over us, so we needed to keep our hands low over the net,” Golsteyn said. “We really did a good job of it.”

DS Tess Perilli had three aces as part of a 13-point serving run that began after Green’s kill.

“With them being a smaller team, if we could get a big block in front of them and serve aggressively – and we talked the whole time about going after it and not playing safe – I knew we could take it,” said Golsteyn. “Our serving was great the whole match. Obviously our serving set up a lot of that blocking and the defense.”

Trailing 18-5, Soares slammed a kill to break the Jammers scoring drought, but Impact countered quickly with Green, which kick started another seven-point run, which ended with Impact players hugging, screaming and jumping into one another’s arms.

“They wanted it,” Golsteyn said. “I think they learned a lesson in pool play when we had one loss. They didn’t really come out and want it and play with that edge. They learned their lesson. It helped us re-focus and play with a lot of intensity.”

“We think everything happens for a reason,” Woods said. “We lost a match in pool play and got down but I think we needed it to push us to get our goal of getting to the finals.”
